AJK Education System

Hamza Niaz// Spoiled by dirty politics the education system in Azad Kashmir has been allowed to rot. The government is keen on establishing new institutions without bothering about the quality of education, which shows lack of a proper education policy.

You might have seen the Alif Ailaan district education rankings 2015 in which AJK rocks by leaving all other parts of Pakistan behind in the race. In all of these surveys most of districts of AJK top the categories of Primary, Middle and Secondary levels of education. All but two of the Districts are among top 40 districts. All districts of AJK have a high education score between 70-79.

From these statistics, it seems AJK is undergoing an educational revolution that would totally change its face but real situation in AJK is a far cry from these reports.
Well in terms of quantity we excel in all levels of education. With population of only 4-4.5 million we have 5 Universities, 3 Medical colleges, Engineering universities, dozens of Post graduate and Degree colleges and thousands of schools, these are pretty impressive figures. Quantitatively, we are at the forefront but when it comes to quality of education we lag behind many parts of Pakistan.

Spoiled by dirty politics our educational system has has been allowed to rot. Government is only keen on establishing new institutions without bothering about their quality of education, which shows lack of their proper education policy.

Number of institutes and students is beefing up and Faculties are getting undersized. New jobs are created for the benefit of acquaintances of politicians and talented youth is inclined to migrate towards other parts of Pakistan as well as foreign countries. One example of this incompetence and mismanagement is establishment of three medical colleges simultaneously to get political support from respective areas.

One medical college with sufficient seats was enough to cope with the shortage of doctors in AJK but  after many years of struggle not a single medical college among three is fully recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental council (PMDC), the regulating body of medical institutions in Pakistan.

PMDC bans their admissions now and then. To conceal their inefficiency and corruption they once tried to create AJK medical & dental council (AJKMDC) to get the boat floating, a decision that would end up isolating the AJK in the medical field. But after wide spread criticism they had to take a U turn again.

Now all of these medical colleges are short of funds. There is a lack of adequate infrastructure as well. Faculties are not according to established standards and there is wide spread corruption and misuse of money from bottom to top.

As far as education on the lower levels is concerned there is also lack of proper infrastructure. The problem is same, quantity is soaring and quality is plunging.

The conditions of universities are not very different. Corruption and mismanagement is more widespread and greater is the interference of politics. No one can get job for their capability and talent and thus most of people on the top are incompetent and not suitable for jobs they hold. There is no way to regulate this monster that has been unleashed by our unjust system.

The real complications are about to come in upcoming years when thousands of new graduates will enter in the system: doctors, engineers, science graduates and government will be unable to assimilate them in system and this sudden rise of unemployed youth will totally change the face of AJK if this ineffectual education system doesn’t.
